The snippet comes from my latest release Enigma III – Friends and Family
Blurb: Silver and River are healing, but both are still struggling to reconcile Silver’s life before his time at the Theatre De La Vie, with after. It doesn’t help that Ariel keeps coming around and causing trouble. When he encourages Silver to collect Ben from school he unleashes a can of worms that could easily have had fatal consequences.
Silver has come back from the Theatre de la Vie a changed man. No longer does he rely on River for everything. He has a new look, a job and friends, but they’re friends River has a hard time accepting. Especially Ariel. Here, River is talking to Sam, their burly cop friend about just what it is that’s eating him and he finally admits he’s jealous
“Jealous of what?”
“I don’t know. Of the things they shared and I didn’t, I suppose. Ariel is… is a… He’s what I thought Silver would never be again,” I rub a hand over tired eyes. This isn’t making sense, even to me. Dig deep and offer up more excruciating honesty. “He makes me think of Asher and I still haven’t come to terms with that. Whenever Ariel or one of the others is coming to visit I catch him twisting that ring and staring into space. He doesn’t know he’s doing it but I know he’s thinking of Asher and I feel….”
“You feel pushed out by a dead man?”
Poor River. His situation sounds complicated.
It’s very complicated, but that’s what you get for falling in love with a former sex slave who was stripped of his entire personality at 12 years old and is completely lost in a world where no one is telling him what to do; what to be
Wow, I love this bit of character development! It’s beautiful, complex, and all the more intriguing with all of River’s little gestures, as he tries to figure out exactly what he’s saying.
Silver is, always had been and always will be the central focus of the books. Everything revolves around him because he’s just that kind of person. As he slowly emerges from the darkness of his past he becomes far more than either of them ever expected and that, as much as anything, is hard for River to handle. Even by this point Silver has changed beyond recognition, while remaining essentially the same. The biggest problem for River is that Silver is not entirely reliant on him anymore. While it is true to say that Silver is still in a place where he would probably be unable to live independently, he now has a life away from River, with friends River has nothing in common with. It’s hard for River and he tries hard. He just keeps getting it wrong. He still doesn’t really understand Silver at all.
You do know these characters keep ripping my heart to pieces, don’t you?
What can I say? I’m evil, and unrepentant 😀
Heartbreaking, but I understand where he’s coming from.
Silver is a beautifully simple character (in a very complex way). He hides nothing and is very loving. When he loves, he loves with all his heart – that includes his friends. His first love is and always will be River but sometimes River finds that hard to remember and believe, especially when Silver’s new friends are so much more like him than River will ever be. Jealousy is a terrible thing. I don’t blame River in this instance though, after all Silver did sleep with Asher and Asher was a very, very hard act to follow.
Complicated and sad, hurtfully honest though, I like that…
River is not good at being honest with himself, but Sam won’t let him be anything but. Without Sam keeping him on track who knows what would happen
Beautifully captured moment. The dead have such power at times like that.
Thank you River is having a very hard time coming to terms with the fact that, not only did Silver sleep with another man (they were definitely on a break) but that man gave Silver things River never could, and in the end he gave him his life. Even though Asher is dead, he still threatens the relationship because neither of them can get over him and the very fact that being with Asher changed Silver so much is an “in-your-face” reminder to River.
Poor River.
Heartbreaking
