This week, I’m sticking with The Runaway. I’m fond of this book for many reasons. For one thing, its premise is build around a fairytale and, recently, my interest in fairies has been piqued again.
Ciarrai is running away from a past that’s still breathing down his neck. Jack has no past, his memory wiped in the accident that killed his parents. They meet and their lives move forward like stones skimming the surface of the water, dipping into memories that want to surface and those that want to lie buried forever.
We skip on another year, and Ciarrai has a plan
Shuffling closer to the cliff’s edge he was absorbed by the nothingness beneath his feet. It would be so easy. One more step. So easy.
He wondered what it would feel like to take that step— to fall and fall and never stop falling. The idea called to the deep hole he could feel inside him. One step and he would become one with it. Smiling, he shook his head and turned away. Yes, it would be easy to jump and turning away from the edge was hard, but he hadn’t spent a year planning escape to have it end on the edge of a cliff in the middle of nowhere.

I love how descriptive this is, the fall into nothingness…
Some useless information. There is a thing called L’appel du vide (the call of the void) which happens when you stand on the top of a tall building or cliff that, even if you are happy, well adjusted and non-suicidal, will momentarily call you to jump 😀 It also relates to that part of the brain (sorry, I don’t remember which) that calculates the most direct way to achieve objectives and the fastest way down from a cliff or tall building is to jump 😀
Nice touch of inner tension in this. I’m curious as to what he’s escaping from and what his plan is.
You can see what he’s escaping from if you check back a couple of weeks. As for what his plan is – that will become clear in good time. When he’s allowed to, Ciarrai is a man who very much knows his own mind and is comfortable in his skin
Very nice look into his inner darkness. Unfortunately that fall probably wouldn’t be endless, Ciarrai.
Nope, it definitely wouldn’t. Very few are although at the moment Ciarrai feels that he is falling endlessly and I think jumping off the cliff would be to end it not perpetuate it. Still, he’s not jumping off any cliffs any time soon
