This is an exciting time for me. We’re working up to publishing Book III in the Enigma series, which is far and away my favourite series of books I’ve written. (Well, okay it’s the first series I’ve written, but the characters are real and I’m in love with Silver – for real.)

I have only published the first two books so far and have hesitated because I’m cautious about the editing of these books. Because they are being published very kindly by a friend, they are practically self published and therefore the weight of editing is down to me. I’m brassic so I can’t pay for anyone to do it for me, therefore they’re rough and I don’t want people to see Silver and his friends that way. However, the alternative is for people not to see them at all and they are no longer happy about that. Ariel, in particular wants to be SEEN and I can’t deny him for long.

Therefore, Red Haircrow, who is a very talented and dear man has been working hard on new covers. The cover of Book I has already been revealed.

In a few weeks the cover of Book II will be revealed and for the following week, leading up to the release of Book III, Books I and II will be free. This is because the series is not stand alone and anyone wanting to buy Book III should really read I and II first.

In preparation for all that, I thought I would introduce some of the characters and situations from the first two books.

Book I Enigma

Troubled residents come and go at the Care House where River Caulfield is a caregiver, working towards fulfilling his dream of becoming a nurse. When Silver arrives, a patient found on a roadside near death after suffering terrible abuse, River finds his previous personal detachment is compromised. Seeking to help the mysterious and enigmatic young man locked inside his own mind and memories, River finds his professionalism slipping as Silver begins to open up and live again.

But as their relationship begins to blossom, the roots of Silver’s past abuse and the abuser who forced him into such a mental state sends forth new shoots of darkness enveloping them in dangers threatening not only Silver’s sanity, but their very lives. With River’s devotion and help, will Silver finally be able to break away from his past? The answer lies in the words of a priest, a painting and a long walk through a churchyard harbouring the secrets of the enigma that is Silver.

Slowly, Silver begins to come out of his shell and reveals to River what a truly beautiful person he is. He also reveals what a horrendous experience he’s lived through. River discovers that, at the age of twelve, Silver was snatched of the streets by a trafficking ring and taken to a “training center” where his personality was stripped away and he was turned into a willing sex slave, which is what he remained for the following seven years until, after falling in love with another slave he was forced to watch his lover beaten to death in front of him, then beanted himself and left for dead at the side of a motorway.

As Silver slowly recovers he reveals more and more to River what a very special person he is. The, on the first day Silver finds the courage to leave the house, on the day he finally persuades River to kiss he is again snatched back into his past, River with him. River watches helplessly while Silver is beaten, then they are taken to an abandoned werehouse where they await the arrival of The Master, and the end of Silver’s life.

Stretching out, with his eyes only inches from my own, it’s easy to forget everything for a moment. Soon, our world will erupt in violence, but here and now everything is quiet and still. We’re barely breathing, watching each other with hungry eyes, eating up every millimetre of each other’s face. I can’t help but think I have the better deal.

Despite the already darkening bruises on his ghostly pale face, Silver is breathtakingly beautiful. An angel in a nest of demons. I can’t help it; I have to touch him. He doesn’t smile as my hand caresses his shoulder and trails down his arm. Shivering slightly, he raises his hand to touch my face.

“I wish…” His finger brushes my lips and he shakes his head slightly. I know what he means. This moment is holy. I will not bring the terror in to spoil it.

Silver’s eyes turn introspective for a moment and then meet my own. He smiles a strange little smile.

“Yes?” I feel a little trepidation at his tone and frown slightly. It makes him smile.

“It’s Matthew.” I’m puzzled, not understanding, and I shake my head a little. “My name: it’s Matthew.”

Next week, we’ll skip ahead to Book II, so don’t be too scared as you know our boys survive to get there 😀
