This week I have another snippet from my co written New Adult book Upstaged Opening Act.
Wannabe singer and band frontman Erik Von Nordgren hates snarky Brit Asher Berkley with a passion. From the moment he turns up at practice with his twin sister Daisy, who is one of the band the two have hated each other.
Through a series of ‘tit for tat’ incidents they annoy, frustrate and exasperated each other. The die hard goth with purple eyes and the hardcore rocker with dreams of the big time have nothing in common and no need to cross paths. Except to wind each other up.
Until the day that Erik throws Asher in the school pool, when everything begins to change. Erik is so far in the closet he’s in Narnia and Asher has a dark past and trust issues that stand in the way of any relationship, let alone one with the brash American who hurts him every time they try to get together.
A relationship doomed from the start, or so you’d think.
Erik takes Asher to a party at Joey’s house. Both Billy and Asher have gone all out to impress Erik but neither is impressed when Erik backs off yet again. After an evening of wildly swinging mixed messages, Erik screws up as both Asher and Billy throw his bullshit in his face and vow “never again”. While Billy is consoled by Joey’s cousin, Asher flees the party. He is tracked down by Vince, one of the band’s followers and an old friend of Billy’s.
Vince is a sweet, bubbly guy with body issues and a shy, hesitant manner that absolutely endeared him to us from the start. When we first sketched out this book, knowing it was to be the start of a series, Vince was intended to be a creepy stalker who would cause issues in the later books. When we started writing, however, he was so adorable we couldn’t turn him evil and that led to Vince’s part growing to point where he quickly became an MC and absolutely integral to the story.
Vince’s sweetness is a balm to Asher’s shattered nerves, and after they share something that is…erm…slightly illegal, they go back to Vince’s place where Asher vows to make Vince feel as special as he actually is.
Sliding off the bed, Asher bared his own chest and took off his boots. Peeling out of his trousers and pants, he stood naked in all his glory. Vince’s eyes grew wide as saucers. He shook, helpless to move, so Asher gently stripped the rest of Vince’s clothes and straddled him.
“Are you sure you want this?” Asher asked.
“I…” Vince stuttered, his voice squeaking with nerves. “I dunno how you can look at me. I’m too fat.” He grasped Asher tighter.
“Shhh. Don’t let me ever hear you say something like that. You’re beautiful.” Asher caressed Vince’s body before him, running over the smooth curves and gently stroking Vince’s supple skin. “Your skin is so nice, and it feels good to touch.” Accentuating his words with action, Asher lay down, pulling the dark-blue cover over them. Pressing their bodies together, Asher allowed Vince to feel the evidence of his excitement.
